America's First People

(including New Hampshire's First People)

By Rosalind P. Hanson

"This informative book is divided into two parts. Part I is a general overview of the various Native American cultures that settled in North America from 50,000 BC to European contact, including an interesting section on significant cultures that did not survive into modern times. Unlike many Native American histories, the author also includes information about current Native American cultural projects and notable Native American citizens. Part II is fascinating for its focus on Native American peoples in New Hampshire as settlers, survivors, and achievers. The author includes many helpful diagrams, maps and photographs, and the reader will especially appreciate Hanson's attention to local efforts to preserve and celebrate Native American culture." Ex Libris, The New Hampshire Writers' Project's newsletter, 1998

"Much has been written about Native Americans of the plains and Southwest but relatively few good basic books are available about Native Americans of the area we now call New England. Rose Hanson has filled an important niche with her book, America's First People." Charles "Bud" Thompson, Co-Founder Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum

"...I hope it will see a broad distribution, especially to children of school age. It would make a wonderful companion piece to any presentation by the NH Intertribal Native American Council..." Gary W. Hume NH State Archaeologist with the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources

"A poem is about many things. There's some arithmetic in how the words come, the lines break. There's the roll of language spoken. There's continuance of the craft that poets have been practicing a long, long time. But a poem is, especially, about seeing... Elizabeth sees." - Mary Lyn Ray
